Home Improvements after being Caregiver for Parents with Alzheimer's for Three Years

I am in search of funding for home repairs and improvements. I was sole caregiver for my parents for three years in my home. They both suffered from Alzheimer's. At the time I was taking care of my parents, I was an elementary school teacher. As you well know, education does not provide an elaborate salary. I did the best I could to make ends meet, but needless to say, home repair was not an item that was high on my to do list. My first and only priority was taking care of my parents.

If you know anything about Medicare, then you know about the "Donut Hole" that occurs when a recipient falls between what Medicare will pay for medication and when Medicare declares a recipient to have suffered a catastrophic illness. During this "Donut Hole" the recipient pays full price for all medications. This occurs during each calendar year the recipient is covered under Medicare. Both of my parents reached that point during May each of the three years they lived with me, so any extra available money went to make sure they had their medications. Their medications ran anywhere from $2000 to $4000 a month each.

During the three years my parents lived with me, they flooded my house four or five times with dirty commode water. Once because my mother tried to flush the pair of socks she had on that had gotten dirty. Another time when my father tried to flush the pair of underwear in which he had had a bathroom accident. The other times were just the usual bathroom issues.

Unfortunately for me, I had to use the insurance money that was supposed to repair my home for my parents' medications. Faced with the same situation again, I wouldn't handle anything any differently. My parents were my life! My parents both succumbed to the effects of Alzheimer's in 2013 - My mother in June and my father in November.

Even though is has been almost four years since their passing, I have not been able to acquire the funding to make the necessary repairs and improvements to my home.

I have been living in my home with no carpet, just the concrete slab, furniture that smells of human waste in my family room, mattresses in my two guest bedrooms that have been ruined.

Like I said, given the same circumstances, I would not do anything differently. I would take care of my parents with every last penny I had.

If you find it in your heart to help me fulfill this request, I will be forever grateful.

May the Lord bless you.
